タカノタツヤのお蔵だし　その１

　これからお百度ットコム・四十二踏み目を書こうと思っている。場所は赤間神宮（下関市）である。
　赤間神宮は、初々しい歴史ファンだったころから、ひねた歴史マニアになった今でもたびたび訪れる場所であるが、昨年の夏、長崎に拉致監禁されるような逼迫した状況の中、下関から長府当たりを歩き回った際に、赤間神宮にも立ち寄った。
　ファインダーをのぞくたびに、汗が目にしみ込むような暑さの中だった。

　それはとある企画を立てるためであり、ボクはこの原稿を書いた。

　赤間神宮について書くときに、どうしても避けられない人物がいて、その人を主人公にした原稿である。もう時効なので、webアップすることにした。白石正一郎さんという、幕末下関の奇特な商売人の話である。本来なら冒頭の原稿に過ぎないが、あえて未完のまま掲載する。

維新のパトロン　白石正一郎

　時代を動かすのは、意志である。熱情である。
　そのエネルギーを実体化させるにはお金、つまり先立つモノがなければお話にならない。
　下関は幾度か、時代を揺さぶる震源地になった。その最も大きな激震は列島をひっくり返して、近代明治国家を生み出しだ。
　高杉晋作二十五歳。この若者とその構想に、五十二歳の白石正一郎は、持てるすべてを投資した。
　その配当を、日本国民あまねく、今もなお受け取り続けている。

西郷が訪れ、龍馬も来た。その浜門を歴史がくぐった。

長府松小田本町の浜門

　　交通量が激しい国道９号線から一本、嘘のように静かな小道の途中に、その門はあった。
　下関の豪商・白石家の浜門である。

　　門扉の板戸はすすけ、黄土色の土塀は崩れかけていた。風雪は、門とともに白石正一郎の存在も消しかけている。そんな危うさをにじませて、浜門はたたずんでいた。
　筆者が訪れた時は、現在の当主という女性が、塀から突き出ていたという梅の木の枝をせっせと手入れしていた。聞けば、ご本人は白石家とは縁もゆかりもない。父君が家屋を購入したために、「歴史の門」の所有者となってしまった。

「維持が大変なのよ。門も庭も。ちょっと中に入ってみてよ」。
　女主人に招き入れられ門をくぐった瞬間は、庭の造作など目に入らなかった。

　　白石家は、赤間関竹崎で代々、回船問屋を営んでいた。白石邸跡は現在の国道１９１号線に面する中国電力下関営業所にあった。現在の様子からは想像できないが、このあたりは船着き場のある海岸線で、浜門は海に向かって開かれていた。この門から、歴史そのものがくぐってきた。

　正一郎が書き残した詳細な日記が残されている。西郷隆盛が訪れた日からスタートする日記には、４００人を超える志士が名を連ねている。そのことごとくに宿を貸し、金品を惜しげもなく援助した。その風評を聞きつけたのか、土佐脱藩直後、世間的にはまだまだ無名の坂本龍馬も、まっさきに白石邸を訪れている。
　白石正一郎の名前を不滅にしたのは、長州の風雲児高杉晋作との出会いだろう。ある日、若者が無言であの門をくぐり、ズカズカと家に上がり込んで、大広間の床柱を背にあぐらをかいて「奇兵隊を作るっ」と叫んだ。正一郎はすぐさま「分かりました」と同意したという。晋作は、志さえあれば身分を問わず参加できる奇兵隊の設立を藩に申し出ていて許可を得ると、その足で白石邸を“奇襲”したのだ。

　この後、正一郎は晋作及び長州藩の討幕運動に、資金を投下しつづける。あまりにも気前よく投資し続けた結果、明治維新を迎えるころには破産同然となった。

　莫大な私財を天下に還元し、維新後は元勲としての名声を求めず、赤間神宮の初代宮司を勤めて余生を送った。その際に居を長府に移したが、同時に浜門も移築した。「私はすべてを無くしたわけではない」。国事に生きたお金を使い切った白石正一郎の晩年の静かな心境を、朽ちかけた浜門が語りかけているような気がしてならない。
