　朝4:00から、北九州市の市場で魚のセリを取材した。
　思っていたより荒クレタ雰囲気ではなかったけれど、競り落としたその場で売ってしまう北九州システムのスピード感は面白かった。潮風と魚の臭いとたばこの煙で構成された男気が、ピューッと風でかき混ぜられて芯から冷えた。手がかじかんでカメラのシャッターボタンの場所が分からなくなった。カメラの電池もすぐに消耗してしまった。

　ピーッと笛が鳴ると、セリが始まる。市場で五ヶ所ほど同時多発的にはじまる。取材する男の子は図体はデカイけれど動きがすばやくて、すぐに見失ってしまう。

　気になったのは「手カギ」。金属製の先っぽがカギ状に曲がっていて、発泡スチロールや木の箱やらをガチッと引っ掛けて持ち上げる。みんなコシの後ろ当たりのベルトに引っ掛けていて、スッと取り出してパッと差し込む。居合いのよう。海賊で腕の先っぽが丸ごと手カギになっているのは、合理的なんだと思った。引っ掛けて抱え込む。そういう動きにジャストフィットする。

　長靴もかっこよろしい。白でも黒でも黄色でも何でもこの場ではカッコいい。長靴は男の履物であるなぁ。

　結局午前９時くらいまでずっと取材していて、体が冷えてしまった。社員食堂でチャンポンを頼む。やっぱりかなり味が濃い。牛蒡が入っているのが珍しかった。
　アンコウがエイリアンのフェイスハガーに見えて仕方なかった。
